Westwood Credits Putting Coach

Lee Westwood acknowledged the help of putting coach Phil Kenyon recently when he was interviewed at his season opener in Abu Dhabi. In reference to his stunning end of season form which saw Westwood win in South Africa and Thailand he stated 'The most pleasing thing was about four weeks prior to that I started working with Phil Kenyon, my new putting coach'. 'To shoot 62 around Sun City and then 60 and 64 around the course in Thailand you need to start making a few 15-footers, which I've been missing for the previous 17 years. 'Once they start going in all of a sudden you turn what would be a good round of 65 into a 60 or 62.'Westwood's main aim for the season, of course, is to try to end his wait for a major' 'I think it's very difficult to win a major without making a few (putts) that are surprising or bonuses, so if I can start rolling in a few 25- to 30-footers that's obviously going to make a massive difference. 'The difference with Phil is that my practice is a lot more structured and based around drills to make sure that I do the same thing over and over again. It helps your whole game. It gives you confidence - if you start making putts that you have not been making then it takes the pressure off your long game.' To read the full article click here : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/golf/article-2091448/Luke-Donald-Martin-Kaymer-worlds-biggest-bunker.html#ixzz1lJCEhecn

Formby Hall golf star Tommy Fleetwood aiming to keep his feet firmly on the ground

VERY few golfers have entered the ultra-competitive arena of the European Tour with such a heavy weight of expectation on their young shoulders as Tommy Fleetwood. Many observers have instantly ditched the ifs and buts about what may happen in his rookie year in favour of it being a case of when the 20-year-old Merseysider pockets his first top-tier title among the golfing elite. But that is hardly surprising given the Southport player's pedigree. A distinguished amateur career saw him play in the Walker Cup, win both English and Scottish amateur championships and rise to become the world's number one amateur scratch player. After making the switch to the professional ranks a little over 12 months ago, Fleetwood climbed to the summit of the European Challenge Tour rankings, helped by a maiden win at the Kazakhstan Open, and an immediate promotion to join the game's household names like Westwood, Donald and Harrington. There are many who will tell you that in the years ahead a new name will join that exalted company - Fleetwood. Except, that is, for the young man at the centre of all the attention. Enjoying a morning off from the practice range at his home club, Formby Hall ahead of this week's appearance at the Thailand Open, Fleetwood was unfazed by predictions of approaching golfing greatness, preferring instead to talk about the hard work that lies ahead, the improvements he needs to make to his game and the tough challenge of breaking into the winner's enclosure in a sport where every one of your fellow competitors is a potential champion. "The fact that people are expecting me to do well is great, because it shows I have achieved things in the past and hopefully that will carry on," he said. "It was the same when I joined the Challenge Tour, although halfway through the year I had lived up to nothing. "What matters to me is that I carry on doing the things that have served me well, that I work hard and play well. "I have to concentrate on keeping my feet on the ground while retaining my card next year will be a first priority. "I am looking forward to getting out there, but I know it will be tough. If I don't play well, I won't keep my card. You are playing against the best in the world and there are so many players with the potential to win each event. "The courses will be tougher, even though there are plenty of good venues on the Challenge Tour, and I think I will have to drive the ball better. "The margin for error is smaller and if you do hit a bad shot you are punished for any mistakes. The rough is that much more penal. "I also want to work on my wedges because the short game is so important while I would like to start the year physically stronger, too. I putted well this year, but you can always improve on the greens as that is where you score. But I don't feel the pressure of having to achieve things. "It has happened quickly for me - I am a Tour player at just 20 - but over the years the work I have done with the English Golf Union and playing in top events like the Walker Cup all helped prepare me for life as a pro." Fleetwood should, at least, be used to being tipped for stardom. Dad Pete, who was his caddy in Kazakhstan, has always said he would be a future world number one while two members at Southport Municipal, where he started out, took out a wager at the bookies before he even turned pro that he would go on to become an Open champion. The mantelpiece at the family home was left groaning under the weight of the many and varied trophies Fleetwood picked up, first with Sefton Juniors and later as a schools champion, Lancashire county player and England international. While the trophies started piling up from an early age, it was not until he was 13 or so that the idea of becoming a tournament player took a firm hold. "Up until the age of 13 or 14 it was just for fun," he explains, "but at that age I just knew it was what I wanted to do. "I had enjoyed some success and wanted more. I have always practised hard - although my school work did start to slip!" Fleetwood's commitment to honing his skills has helped propel him to the top level of European golf, but he feels his golfing experiences across the globe have helped him grow up. He says: "Not many 20 year-olds get to do what I am, so it has probably helped me mature a bit more. "I now need to keep working on my game, improving. If I find myself on a tee alongside the likes of a Westwood and McIlroy next year it will be a great opportunity to learn from the best. I believe that if I keep working hard and concentrating on what is right for me, I can be competitive against them." And few would bet against that.

Southport golfer Tommy Fleetwood wants to earn a place in golfing history

TOMMY FLEETWOOD has earned his place among the riches of the European Tour - but it is not the money that is driving him on to new heights. Instead it is the thought of creating golfing history that inspires the young player from Southport. The 20 year-old cites the likes of Tiger Woods and Roger Federer as sporting heroes - players who have dominated their peers and amassed a remarkable collection of titles to their name. Having already ensured that he will be remembered as the number one amateur player in the world in 2010 and then occupying the same lofty role on the second tier European Challenge Tour rankings in 2011, Fleetwood now wants to make his mark on the game's biggest stage. "I've not modelled my golf swing on anyone in particular, but Tiger Woods is a hero of mine," says the Formby Hall player. "I have grown up watching him making history. "Roger Federer is another who has made history in his own sport while in golf Rory McIlroy has the potential to do the same and it is great to have grown up in an era with those kind of people around. "At the Dunhill Championships, I got the chance to play Padraig Harrington, a three-time Major winner. It was a great experience just watching him play, and learning from how he goes about his game. I wasn't sure of the right time to speak to him, but in the end he chatted to me and it was helpful to be able to ask him questions." Fleetwood admits that it is the winning - not how much he wins - that is his motivating factor. "It is the buzz of being competitive and being in the mix to win on the final day," he adds. "To be honest, in the past if I was not in the mix on a Sunday I did have problems motivating myself. "That won't happen this year because one of the things I have learnt as a professional is that every shot counts, especially when you are playing to keep your card. Perhaps as an amateur you can get away with a couple of mistakes a round over the course of a tournament, but now that would mean me going home early. "I love the feeling of winning and the money, while nice, does not really matter. We have never really had a lot of money as a family so while the riches on offer would be good, it is the thought of winning that keeps me going." The fact that it is the golf - not the money - that means Fleetwood remains focussed on chasing the top prizes means he will have to learn how to manage his schedule. Such is his enthusiasm to play, that in his rookie year Fleetwood took part in a few events when tired or carrying a bit of an injury. "I am the sort of player who wants to be out there, but if I find my game is suffering I will take a break," says Fleetwood, who found that when he did take time out to cure a niggling back problem this year it did him the power of good. "But I enjoy playing and I don't want to miss out on any opportunities." That means Fleetwood won't tailor his rookie 2012 programme on the European Tour around certain events, but he is looking forward to playing in showpiece tournaments like the PGA Championship at Wentworth and taking a shot at qualifying for the Open at Royal Lytham and possibly the US Open, too. He will stick to the tried and trusted team that have helped his career so far, although dad Pete, who has been on the bag at several Challenge Tour events, will move over for a full-time caddy in Scott Barnes. Fleetwood will continue to see long-term coach Alan Thomspon at Heswall, putting guru Phil Kenyon and former Italian Open winner Jim Payne, at Southport and Ainsdale, whose advice has been instrumental in his rise through the amateur ranks to the highest level of the professional game. Acknowledging that the game is every bit a mental challenge as physical, Fleetwood will continue to lean on Brian Hemmings, who he has worked with since his days with England and the English Golf Union. And the ultimate dream? "Winning an Open at Royal Birkdale would be just fantastic!" And that really would cement his place in golfing folklore.

Bjorn Again

Congratulations to HSPSE pupil Thomas Björn who held his nerve in a five man play-off to win the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles. It's the 2nd victory this season for the Danish stalwart, after his win in Qatar. The 40 year old carded a final round three under par 69 for a 11 under par total to join Mark Foster, George Coetzee, Bernd Wiesberger and Pablo Larrazábal in the five hole play-off. In sudden-death, Wiesberger and Larrazábal, with a bogey3 six, dropped out at the first two holes and, after the final trio all made four on the third, Foster dropped out on the next after shooting a bogey six. Björn, fourth in the 140th Open Championship last month, holed from three feet away, but Coetzee made a 12 footer to take it into a fifth hole where the Dane sealed victory with a birdie. "I didn't really see that coming after my two weeks in America. But I played nicely this week. I played fantastic on Thursday and I played great today," Björn said. "The way I played the last three playoff holes, I can't be more proud of what I did." Bjorn works with putting coach Phil Kenyon who was at hand earlier in the week at Gleneagles to run his eye over Bjorns preparations. "Thomas was looking good in practice. I was out in the US with him for the PGA and although he missed the cut, while out there i felt his putting stroke was really coming on. As soon as he got his eye back in with his full swing I knew he would have a good week. I guess it came around sooner than i thought".

King Fisher Grabs Maiden Win

Congratulations to HSPSE student Oliver Fisher who completed a remarkable change of fortunes by holding off a succession of challengers to capture the Czech Open. Six years after becoming the youngest Walker Cup player in history, the 22 year old Englishman carded a closing 69 to finish 13 under par at Prosper Golf Resort and win by two shots. The feat was all the more impressive considering Fisher came into the week 224th in The Race to Dubai, and having missed 20 of his first 21 cuts this season, before finishing 35th in Sweden and 45th in Ireland last month to indicate some improvement. He said: "Getting your first win is obviously special, but especially as I've struggled so far this season. My form has been horrific, but golf's a funny game. I went through a lot of different emotions out there today. I hit it well on the range this morning, so that gave me confidence. I played the front nine really well, then got a bit unlucky on the tenth. After that, the wheels started to fall off a little bit. "I saw Mika Lundberg was on 12 under coming down the 14th, and 15 is a tricky par three with lots of water. So all sorts of things were going through my head at that stage. I hit the green, but then three-putted. So to sink birdie putts on 16 and 17 was huge, and then I played the 18th very well. "I really enjoyed it out there today, and I've had a lot of fun this week. I've played well since Sweden, and played better every week since. I did a lot of good work back home in the two weeks before this event, and it's paid off. Hopefully this is the start of big things for me." The work included a visit to the Harold Swash Putting School at based at Formby Hall Golf Club where Fisher spent some time with his Putting Coach Phil Kenyon. "Ollie regualrly comes up to the studio when he has chance, as well as the work we do out at tour events" commented Kenyon. "Im so pleased for him as he works so hard and his attitude has been fantastic all year despie not havin he results he wants. This now makes it 6 wins including one major for our pupils this year, which is obviously fantastic to be part off. Long may it continue" The win moves Fisher inside the top 70 in The Race to Dubai, a remarkable achievement for a player who started the week in serious danger of losing his card. He now has a two-year exemption to take care of that.

Darren Clarke 2011 Open Champion

Congratulations to Pupil Darren Clarke who kept his nerve to clinch his maiden major title with a three-shot victory in the Open at Royal St George's.The 42-year-old Northern Irishman who works with Putting Coach Phil Kenyon fired a final-round 70 to finish five under to hold off Americans Phil Mickelson (68) and Dustin Johnson (72). Clarke led by one from Johnson going into the last round and he showed complete control of his emotions and his putting stroke on the way to lifting the claret jug. Solid puts on the 1 st , 2 nd and 3rd settled his nerve while 20 ft eagle putt on the 7th established a platform from which he never really looked back. Four-time major champion Mickelson had started the day five strokes off the lead and scorched around the front nine in 30, including his own eagle at the long seventh. The 41-year-old left-hander picked up another shot at the 10th to close the gap to one, but his wheels fell off in spectacular fashion as he dropped four shots in six holes to end his chance of a maiden Open title. He did, though, beat his previous best Open finish of third at Royal Troon in 2004. Johnson, 27, had scrapped hard to get to five under, just two behind playing partner Clarke after 13 holes, but went out of bounds on the long 14th and took a double bogey to hand the Northern Irishman a four-shot lead. In 4 th place was fellow HSPSE pupil Thomas Bjorn. Bjorn, who only got into the event late Monday when Vijay Singh withdrew, gave himself a chance to lay the ghosts of 2003 to rest, where he lost a 3 shot lead on the same venue. Starting 2 behind going into the final round birdies difficult to come by due to the stiff breeze and he couldn't quiet get close enough to Irishman. Clarke was understandably emotional after his win. "It is just incredible. I'm a bit speechless. I played ok today, I did what I had to do and the last few holes when I was far ahead I just tried to be careful and not do anything stupid," "I've been very calm all week, I won six weeks ago and the more you put yourself in winning positions the more comfortable you get. I was very comfortable with my game this week. The celebrations could be long and - not arduous - very enjoyable tonight." Full story and video click here

Jack Nicklaus Visits Formby Hall

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus visited Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa on Monday 7th September 2009 to provide coaching to youngsters from the First Tee. The game's most acclaimed player with 18-major titles, Nicklaus (honorary chairman of the First Tee) will meet children and parents to provide a unique golf clinic that covers instruction and the importance of sportsmanship, as well as life lessons. Twenty five lucky youngsters from the First Tee at Heaton Park in Manchester travelled to Formby Hall to meet Jack to take part in coaching and a Q&A session. The children asked him about his life in golf and how they can contribute to others in the community to serve as mentors to other disadvantaged people. Nicklaus has been a long-standing supporter of The First Tee since its inception in the U.S. The programme launched in the UK in June 2009 in Heaton Park Manchester and ambassadors such as Nicklaus and First Tee trustee RBS are helping to grow the programme to other areas of the UK. Jack Nicklaus, said: "At a time when we need to do everything we can to promote positive values in our children, particularly thinking beyond themselves and caring for others, the First Tee has adopted that mission and is doing an excellent job. The First Tee is not just about playing golf, it is much more. It is about giving back to your community, helping others and using the game and its life lessons to succeed in life." "I am honoured to a part of The First Tee. More importantly, I am dedicated to help grow the First Tee programmes around the world, which makes me so proud to be a part of the First Tee's first chapter in the UK at Manchester. This would have never happened without the support of RBS, which has supported the First Tee in the U.S. for many years and its very successful mentoring program. I am proud of my relationship with RBS and its dedication to helping disadvantaged young people around the world." Mark Williams, head of golf at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa, said: "The First Tee is a fantastic organisation and we're delighted to be part of only the second event to take place in the UK. "As an academy we're determined to make the game more accessible to a wider audience and fully support initiatives such as the First Tee. "RBS and Jack Nicklaus stayed at the resort last year and witnessed first hand how good the facilities are here. We have a great teaching space to support Jack's tuition and illustrations."

Tom Haylock Clinches Formby Hall Classic

Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa's first ever PGA EuroPro Tour event was a roaring success. The course record was smashed as hundreds of fans turned out to see the inaugural Formby Hall Classic. Elliot Saltman's (Aegon) record breaking 65 on the first day was not enough to prevent Tom Haylock (Ground Construction Ltd) walking off with the £10,000 prize. Haylock began the final day five shots off the lead at one under par but set about climbing the leader board with seven birdies in his final round - five in six holes from the ninth - and clinched the title by one stroke from James Freeman at five under despite a double bogey at 17. "I wasn't really thinking about it at the start of the day," said Haylock, who climbs from tenth in the Order of Merit to sit one place behind money list leader Scott Jamieson. "I knew it was going to be windy throughout but I can't say I was looking for anything other than one or two under and top ten really. "I just started holing putts at the start of the back nine. I looked at the scoreboard at 15 and knew I was on top and if I could pick one more up in the last few holes I'd be in great shape. Then came the double bogey at 17 and the last is a tough hole too so I thought 'here we go', but thankfully in the end it was enough." Tim Cowell, business development manager at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa, said: "The event was a great success; we witnessed some exceptional golf on a very challenging course, five under par was the best score and difficult to get with a prevailing wind. "It was a great three days of golf, a new course record was set and now our thoughts are turning to next year as we consider securing the Tour again." With the end of the Tour drawing closer, the £10,000 first prize at Formby Hall was much coveted in the chase for a top five spot and a Challenge Tour card, something that the champion is very aware of. "I'm in a great position of course but there's still work to be done. The Tour Championship is worth £20,000 to whoever wins so that's two tournaments effectively, but a top five place is in my hands now," said Haylock, a 33/1 shot for the tournament with official bookmakers Sky Bet. The PGA EuroPro Tour moves to Five Lakes Hotel, Golf, Country Club & Spa for the Brooks Brothers 2009 Classic in Essex, beginning Wednesday August 26.

Liverpool FC Stars turn out for charity

Liverpool players past and present descended on Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa for a charity golf match in aid of rare skin disease Ichthyosis. Kop legend Robbie Fowler organised the fundraiser and helped to raise over £40,000 for the charity. Twenty one teams, captained by football stars including Steven Gerrard, Daniel Agger, Albert Reira and Dirk Kuyt, battled it out on the course before attending an auction dinner in the evening. Robbie Fowler, said: "My godson Thomas suffers from Bullous Ichthyosis and the Support Group has been a magnificent help to him and his family. I couldn't be more pleased that we've managed to raise a large amount of money and want to say a big thank you to everyone who donated." The auction dinner took place at Formby Hall and guests were entertained by comedian John Bishop, before bidding for top prizes. One of which was a weekend away with Steven Gerrard at Loch Lomond to play a four ball round of golf. Ichthyosis is a lifelong, genetic, scaling skin condition for which there is currently no cure. The effect it has on individuals is both physical and psychological as it requires important daily skin routines to prevent infection. The necessary rigid routine can be excruciatingly painful. Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa is home to the UK's only PGA national residential golf academy. Set in 250 acres of parkland it is located just 10 minutes from Sefton's classic resort, Southport and 30 minutes from Liverpool city centre.

World Cup Heroes Play Formby Hall

Forty-three years after England lifted the world cup trophy, the legendary squad of 1966 showed they still have the competitive edge, as they took to the golf course at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa. After battling it out on the 18-hole course for five hours, Ron Flowers - the oldest and earliest-capped member of the world cup squad - emerged victorious. It has been a double-whammy of success for Ron, who along with his former team-mates was presented with a world cup winner's medal by Gordon Brown at Number 10 Downing Street yesterday. It followed years of lobbying by players who did not play in the historic final but were part of the winning squad. John Silker, general manager at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa, said: "The players were in great spirits and clearly excited about their trip to Downing Street. The recognition has been a long-time coming and it's great to see them finally picking-up the accolade." At the end of every football season, the legends get together to discuss the successes and failures of the past year and reminisce about their famous night at Wembley. The players stayed at Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa's luxury 62-bedroom hotel ahead of playing its 18-hole championship course. Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa received a £10million investment transforming the club into a complete resort destination. It opened in July 2008 with a hotel, spa and leisure club, PGA golf academy, 18-hole and nine-hole golf course, short game practice area and 26-bay driving range.
